Revealing the qualities of dune-sand

We might not always realize it, but all our tap water has been intensively filtered and cleaned.
The beauty of this filtration process, which makes use of the natural filter qualities of dune-sand, is easily forgotten. 

Dirty water is spread over the dunes, it seeps down slowly and is eventually pumped up again much deeper, crystal clear. After which it is added to the water supply. This process makes the tap water in the Netherlands of exceptionally high quality, without having to add many chemicals.

The sand integrated in the glazing on the outside of the ceramic objects has been used to filter water ‘contaminated’ with pigments, leaving behind a gradient of colour from top to bottom.
